about

This song came to me while riding shotgun in a friend’s car in Colorado. The sudden, shocking end of my 15-year marriage had hit me with an otherworldly dose of trauma. It threatened to crush and bury me; I let it transform me instead. Two months after writing this song, I met Ben Ewing; from our first jam, we were a band.

A few months before this release, our first, Ben died. This song is in his honor. He will be deeply missed and always loved.

lyrics

There is a hole in my gut
Tells me I’m stuck
I fill it up with wine

My walls hung heavy
And my shelves stacked full, they tell me
They know who I am.

They say I’m not strong enough
I can’t do it alone
So I tear it all down

CHORUS: And then up goes the new;
I can’t let anything hold me back anymore.
Up goes the new;
I can’t let anything hold me back anymore.
Born is the new me.

I hate this sweater, but he always liked it.
I hate the way it doesn’t fit.
I tear at the hem, make a loose thread and pull.

I unravel it while it’s on me,
But it’s not as easy
As I always thought unraveling a sweater would be.

I see life’s not long enough,
I can’t do it alone.
I need help to tear it down.

CHORUS

There’s a hole in my intuition,
So when I’m out fishing,
I never know what I’ve got on my line.

Sculpin says he’s a rockfish,
Cause he thinks that’s what I wish;
Thinks he knows who I am.

Tells me, I’m not strong enough,
I can’t do it alone.
So I throw him back home!*

CHORUS

--
* Turns out he was right after all. I can't do it alone. And I don't have to. Hallelujah!
